Key Meeting with the Rapporteur of the Council of Europe

BPUR International had the pleasure of meeting the General Rapporteur at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Senator Francesco Verducci and the Secretariat of the Equality and Non-discrimination Committee.

The meeting at the House of Commons on April 29th was part of Senator Verducci’s fact-finding mission to present his report regarding the Motion for Resolution, which was launched two years ago in support of our global campaign to enact an ‘International Treaty to Ban the Political Abuse of Religion’.

BPUR International was represented by Lord Rowan WilliamsSir Graham WatsonHayder Alkhoei and Salam Sarhan. They presented how our proposed treaty would be the ultimate tool to counter discrimination based on religion and protect freedom of religion and belief.

Our campaign aims to affirm all international norms by a “highly focused and more effective new international treaty to combat specifically all forms of discrimination on religious grounds”.

BPUR International also held a meeting with Julie Jones, the director of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Freedom of Religion or Belief (APPG-FoRB), where we received the endorsement to join the stakeholders of the biggest parliamentary group in the House of Commons.
