We are delighted to bring to your attention our global initiative to enact an ‘International Treaty to Ban the Political Abuse of Religion, an innovative, indisputable and crucial foundation to eliminate the root causes of religious conflicts and discrimination worldwide.
BPUR International is on the international agenda with proposed parliamentary resolutions, including an imminent supporting resolution at the Council of Europe. It has active engagement with several governments, rapidly growing support in over 80 countries, and partnerships with several prominent international organisations.
We are organising a major conference in the UK House of Commons on 26 March 2026 for leading officials, lawmakers and stakeholders to draw the roadmap on the global stage, sponsored by the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group for International Freedom of Religion or Belief (APPG- FoRB).
Recently, the Slovak National Council tabled a proposed resolution No. 1082, on the “Abuse of Religion for Political Purposes” to align Slovakia with our global campaign. Several other legislative sponsors are now working on similar proposed resolutions across Europe and worldwide.
The initial proposed treaty, drafted by leading officials, lawmakers and UN experts, represents a new approach to introducing clear, simple and indisputable international rules to ban: all political abuses of religion that undermine human equality; all religious discrimination in rights and duties; all religious exclusion in public law; and all restrictions on freedom of religion or belief.
We believe these non-confrontational rules can build a global consensus without offending any religious group or threatening the social and political stability of any country. Moreover, it would be an act of self-condemnation for any government to reject these fair, respectful rules.
The proposed treaty would serve all international objectives and empower governments entangled in religious discrimination to join the global consensus on equality for all. It would help to create better-functioning societies, enhance stability and pave the way for sustainable development.
This is not an attempt to separate religion and politics, which can be divisive. The main objective is to affirm and upgrade the international legal toolkit with a new international treaty to effectively prohibit all forms of oppression and discrimination on the grounds of religion.
At this crucial time, we call on all governments to support this historic effort to deliver a landmark United Nations treaty that will protect freedom and equality for all to make the world more fair and more peaceful.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Salam Sarhan
