International Award for Preventing the Political Abuse of Religion

BPUR International is establishing the “International Award for Preventing the Political Abuse of Religion” to recognise individuals whose leadership and commitment have made an outstanding contribution to advancing ethical governance, protecting freedom of religion or belief, and preventing the political instrumentalisation of religion.

1. Purpose of the Award
The International Award for Preventing the Political Abuse of Religion seeks to:

  • Recognise contributions that advance the prohibition of the political abuse of religion.
  • Encourage leadership that prevents religious division, polarisation, and conflict.
  • Recognise individuals contributing to the protection of equality and non-discrimination.
  • Promote responsible governance aligned with the objectives of the proposed international treaty.

2. Selection Criteria
Recipients will be evaluated based on:

  • Demonstrated leadership in advancing the objectives of the proposed international treaty.
  • Tangible contribution to preventing the political instrumentalisation of religion in public authority.
  • Advocacy for equality and responsible governance.
  • Contribution to international dialogue or legal reform.
  • Alignment with the principles underlying the proposed treaty initiative.

3. Eligibility
The Award may be conferred upon:

  • Political leaders and legislators
  • Religious leaders
  • Civil society leaders and philanthropists

A panel of three distinguished individuals appointed by BPUR International’s Board of Trustees will assess nominations and announce the laureate(s) at major international events.

4. Nature of the Award
The Award is honorary and symbolic, reflecting international recognition by BPUR International. It may be conferred annually or at major milestone conferences.
