Nencini is the chairman of the Committee on Education and Culture in the Italian Senate and prominent writer and historian with a strong interest in the Middle Ages.
He is the president of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Socialist Party and former member of the European Parliament.
Nencini is also the former president of the regional council of Tuscany and former vice minister of Infrastructure and Transport.
