Mary is a British Labour Party politician and Member of Parliament for the City of Durham since 2019.
She currently sits on the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and Co-Chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Cerebral Palsy.
She is also the National Chair of the Movement of Christian Workers and is a member of the trade unions Unite and Unison.
Mary is the grandchild of Irish Catholic immigrants and was born and raised in North East England. Prior to her election to parliament, Mary spent 13 years representing people as a councillor in Gateshead, with particular responsibility for public health.
